Sarah Bolton - Animal Welfare Researcher

About Me

Dedicated to improving animal welfare through research and outreach

Sarah is a veterinarian and animal welfare scientist, currently based at The University of British Columbia's Animal Welfare Program. Her work centres on the welfare of food production animals and approaches to complex challenges in agriculture, with a particular focus on vulnerable animals including non-replacement (surplus) dairy calves. Her research to date has included the use of participatory methods to identify and integrate the needs of a wide range of stakeholders, including industry, the public, and the animals themselves.

Having held previous roles in private and government veterinary practice, industry animal welfare management, and beef and dairy farming, she brings a depth and breadth of practical experience to her research. She believes in the importance of evidence-based approaches to improving animal welfare and fostering dialogue between stakeholders across the agricultural value chain. Ultimately, she aims to support the implementation of food production systems that are simultaneously environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable into the future.
